The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 Movie Review: Done by Rancel
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 movie is a 1986 slasher horror film, directed by Tobe Hooper. It is the sequel to the 1974 horror classic The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. L.M. Kit Carson wrote the script this time around for this more comedic sequel. The cast for the movie features, Dennis Hopper (R.I.P.), Caroline Williams, Bill Johnson and Bill Moseley. Jim Siedow returns as everyone’s favorite,“The Cook”. Bill Johnson wears the “Dead Skin Mask” as Leatherface this time around.
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 movie takes place in 1986, 13 years after the events of the first film. It begins with two drunken rich high school seniors speeding down an abandoned road in Texas. Using their car phone, they make a call to harass radio host Vanita ‘Stretch’ Brock (Caroline Williams). She is unable to convince the rowdy duo to hang up. Shortly after, Leatherface murders the two students in graphic fashion from the truck he emerges out of. DJ Stretch records and listens to their screams of horror. Lieutenant “Lefty” Enright (Dennis Hopper), a former Texas Ranger, Uncle of Sally Hardesty, and her wheelchair bound brother Franklin from the first film. Lefty is obsessed with getting revenge against the cannibalistic Sawyer Clan.
Lefty, who was at grisly crime scene of the two murdered students persuades DJ Stretch to playback the recording of the screaming teenagers. Unfortunately for Stretch, Lefty wasn’t the only witness to the audio recording and is now being targeted by Chop Top (Bill Moseley), Leatherface (Bill Johnson) and The Cook Drayton Sawyer (Jim Siedow). Stretch’s bizarre and terrifying encounter with Chop Top and Leatherface at her radio show studio leaves her friend and co-worker L.G. (Lou Perryman) with his face torned off and incapacitated. Stretch tracks down Chop Top and Leatherface to their hideout where they are preparing to make some good Chilli out of the severely injured L.G. Lefty arrives to help Stretch take down the wacky bunch; Chop Top, Leatherface, and The Cook. So begins a battle for their life, as they fight off this crazy inbred family of killers.
Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 – trailer
I consider the Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 movie as the weakest of the sequels. There is too much emphasis on forced childish type comedy. Apparently Tobe Hooper made this one as a way of poking fun of the original. He wanted to exhibit “The Sawyer Clan” in a wilder, unbound, and more hilarious way. Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 movie had average success at the box office, but it has since become more successful on VHS and DVD.
The most mentally unstable member of the Sawyer clan this go around is Chop Top (Bill Moseley). I consider him the weak link in this sequel. He has his funny moments and displays of unbound insanity. Don’t get me wrong, several of his scenes are very entertaining but it gets to be too much at times. I much prefer the “Hitchhiker”, who is Chop Top’s twin brother from the first film. I also prefer Alfredo from the third (Leatherface: Texas Chainsaw Massacre III 1990) and W.E. from the fourth (Leatherface: Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation 1994).
A closer look into Leatherface’s mental pathology is featured in the Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 movie. He is portrayed in this sequel as being low I.Q. and having what one might call a sexual awakening. I found the scene where he is getting horny over Stretch hilarious. Unlike the original, Leatherface isn’t very scary. He is more like a little child. Chop Top and The Cook bully him a lot. I didn’t really find anything interesting about Lefty(Dennis Hopper). I found Lefty to be boring and he went down rather easy considering he was seeking revenge. The chainsaw duel between him and Leatherface in the Sawyer hideout was cool though.
Jim Siedow as Drayton Sawyer (The Cook) is the best thing about The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 movie. The other characters in his family put on an idiotic forceful display of comedy. Jim Siedow is hilarious and has some of the greatest lines. He gives the character a Mr. Magoo senile style black comedy humor.
Drayton: You coonshits, you fudge packers, you’ll be the death of me yet!
Drayton: You have one choice, boy: sex or the saw. Sex is, well, nobody knows. But the saw, the saw is family.
Drayton: The small businessman… always, always, always gets it in the ass.
Drayton: No secret, it’s the meat. Don’t skimp on the meat. I’ve got a real good eye for prime meat. Runs in the family.
Drayton: It’s a dog eat dog world and from where I sit there just ain’t enough damn dogs!
Drayton: [Hiding under the dinner table while Leatherface and Lefty fight] Maybe its just time to just shut down. Time to shut down the show, yeah. Yeah, pull the plug. Come here, Nubbins!
[Pulls the preserved corpse of the hitchhiker from the original film under the table and searches him]
Drayton: Where… Where’s that fuck you Charlie?
Drayton: Grandpa’s the best, he never misses.
The make-up and special effects are excellent. I really like the opening sequence where one of the high school boys gets half of his head sawed off by Leatherface with blood squirting out. It’s really cool how the special effects/makeup artist, Tom Savini added that sliding effect to part of his head coming off. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 movie differentiates from the first with it having a lot more gore. Despite the higher budget, the sequel is a bit of a letdown. I think complacency came into effect when producing it. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 movie is still a watchable fun horror film. It just doesn’t have the same replay value as the others.
