The Town Film

Description

The Town is a crime drama film that came out in 2010. It has Ben Affleck as the lead character and he also co-wrote it and directed it. It is adapted from Chuck Hogan’s novel Prince of Thieves. It was a box office and critically successful film.

Summary

The Town takes place in the Boston neighborhood of Charleston. Four lifelong Irish neighborhood friends live their lives as bank robbers and drug abusers. The opening scene has Doug MacRay (Ben Affleck), James Coughlin (Jeremy Renner), Albert “’Gloansy”’ Magloan (Slaine), and Desmond “Dez” Elden (Owen Burke) robbing a bank. They wear hoods and masks that make them look like the Grim Reaper. On follow-up robberies they dress up as nuns with old lady masks. I guess these outfits were added as some comic attempt to be funny but it is also frightening too. Jeremy Renner who served a nine-year sentence in jail and is just out plays Doug MacRay’s closest friend. Doug MacRay is also dating James Coughlin (Jeremy Renner) sister, Krista Coughlin played by Blake Lively.

She is a train wreck of a girlfriend who although is beautiful, she abuses drugs and is a bad mother. Doug MacRay‘s father (played by Chris Cooper) is in jail. Claire Keesey (Rebecca Hall) who is the banks attractive manager that the group robbed in the opening scene catches the eye of Doug MacRay and they soon start dating. The group also took her hostage briefly and James Coughlin finds out that she lives in Charlestown close to them. Doug begins to fall in love with Claire much to his best friend James Coughlin and the group’s displeasure. She also gets forced into assisting the FBI. The FBI agent, Frawley (Jon Hamm) who is not a very nice guy also forces Krista Coughlin to help him catch the group of criminals. This all leads to one final attempt by the group, that has now been ratted out, to rob a big bank and are doomed to fail.

The Town Film: The Review

This was one of the best films of 2010. Ben Affleck is an excellent writer and director. All the actors did an excellent job with their roles. Jeremy Renner was the star of the film as the volatile and intimidating thug like James Coughlin. Blake Lively sure was sexy as Ben Affleck’s character drug ridden former girlfriend. Rebecca Hall is lovely as Claire Keesey, Ben Affleck’s new girl he hooks up with for a new direction in life in the movie. She really is great as a girl next-door type girlfriend that any guy would want to settle down with. The FBI agent played by Jon Ham makes you really hate him as he uses questionable methods to get to these guys in the film. You ask yourself why he won’t just leave Doug MacRay and Claire Keesey alone. He is the villain of the film because Doug MacRay is really just an anti-hero who is trying to start over and I believe in redemption. The film does have excessive use of the F-word, violence, and some nudity so this is not a film for kids. This is very much an adult film. It is a long film at 2 hours and 30 minutes but that seems to be the norm for great crime dramas such as this these days. The script of this film is perfect and this is a well put together film that deservingly did good at the box office.
